Not vlogging today because I’ve got a wicked sore throat and want to spare both myself and y’all that agony.
Anyway, replotting is going pretty well. I feel SO MUCH BETTER about the whole project now that I’ve decided to do this instead of trying to force my way through that disaster of a first draft. Like, I don’t dread opening the file or even thinking about opening the file any more.
My major problem turned out to be keeping track of subplots/information that had or had not already been revealed, so I’m charting. Every chapter is broken down into main plot points, subplot points, and what we know/learn about each main character in that chapter. This is really important, especially in something as big as a fantasy novel, because it’s really easy to lose track of what you have or haven’t said already, and so the whole thing can become redundant or confusing.
I’ve also renamed a few characters to better capture their personalities (and to keep everyone’s names from starting with an ‘a’ or ending in an ‘a’- I don’t know what happened there, but yikes!) and done a bit of thinking about voice. My first draft is written from multiple perspectives, and I’m going to keep it like that, but I have to decide whether I’m using a semi-omniscient narrator who’s simply following a different character in each chapter, or if each chapter’s actually going to be in the character’s voice. The latter would definitely be more difficult. I’ve sort of already done it for SOME chapters (which I can’t really explain without revealing the entire plot), but not all… hence the crazy inconsistency in the voice.
So I’ve got a lot to think about, I guess. Tomorrow Neil (yes, ‘the boy’) and I are headed to his parents’ outside Edinburgh, Scotland. We’ll be away until January 2, and I’ll be sans computer! I’m bringing a notebook, obviously, but I’m hoping this time away from the laptop might help me focus. That does mean I’ll likely be checking in via iPod next week, so definitely no vlog, unless I steal Neil’s computer.
Anyway, happy holidays, and wish me luck!
