Don’t you just love spring? Creativity is in the air! It’s blooming right outside your window. And it’s just mind-blowing how many cool events are happening this month for people like us who love books. What’s even more amazing is some of them are happening RIGHT NOW! I had to take time out today to share them with you. Trust me, you don’t want to miss out.
I remember when this bi-annual celebration of YA authors was a much smaller two-team event. Now it has mushroomed into EIGHT TEAMS! During this event – now in progress and ending April 5th at noon PST – you visit each participating author’s website to find out about new authors and exclusive content. You will also find on each page highlighted numbers you’ll need to enter the grand prize contest. This grand prize is unbelievable; one book from each participating author – that’s 160 books! – will be shared by six winners. Many authors may have additional giveaways on their own websites, so there are many opportunities to win FREE BOOKS and other fun literary prizes.
Learning about new authors, reading exclusive content, entering to win free books – yes! What a great way to spend a weekend.
On April 16th, get ready to #RockTheDrop in celebration of YALSA’s Support Teen Literature Day. Not familiar with this event? You take a new or gently used YA book, place a #RockTheDrop bookplate or bookmark inside it and leave it in a public place for someone else to take home and enjoy.
You can then snap a photo of your drop and share it on Readergirlz Facebook page or tweet about it using the hashtag #RockTheDrop. Here are the official bookmarks for you to print off and use for your own book drop:
National Poetry Month – Poem in Your Pocket Day
Reading poetry enriches my writer’s soul. I learn so much about the seduction of language and the importance of word choices. I make sure to include poetry in my reading diet every year and April is a good month to remember that promise to myself. I’ve recently ingested some Bukowski, and I think that’s enough testosterone for one year. Next, I think I”ll try a female poet I’ve never read before.
There are many ways to participate in this month-long celebration. You can follow poetry events happening across the nation by following @POETSorg on Twitter or you can participate in my favorite event, Poem in Your Pocket Day on April 30th. This is where you carry a favorite poem in your pocket and share it with others throughout the day. You can also post your poem on social media to share with others.
Camp NaNo has all the fun of the regular NaNo without the intense daily word count pressure. It’s perfect for those of us who don’t do well with strict guidelines or those of us who like to make up our own rules. You get to set your own writing goals and there are cabins of writing buddies to cheer you on. It has all the fun of camp without the bugs.
S’mores are optional.
This event is also currently in progress, and runs through the entire month of April. If April doesn’t work out as a good camp month for you, think about participating in the next Camp NaNo in July.
TGNA Summer Anthology Submission Contest
As Megan mentioned on April 1st, we are putting together our first ever TGNA blog anthology and we are opening up submissions to our lovely readers. I may be a little biased, here, but I think this one is THE most exciting event this month. Starting April 15th, our submissions will open. Then, you’ll start seeing our stories post right here on the blog and we will want to start seeing YOUR stories. Stay tuned for details about story prompts – we will have a few summer themes to choose from to get you started. I just can’t wait to see what you come up with!
So there you have it – a fine list of fantastic activities to make your April a wonderfully creative month. And I do hope you’ll give our anthology contest a go. It should be a ton of fun.
