Hello Adventurers! I hope your new year is off to a great start with writing and with life in general! It’s a new year so I thought I would talk about picking new projects.
I finished my first novel length project back in August. For the past four months I’ve been revising it while fiddling with some other projects. However, now that I’ve finished my first round of edits – OMG – it’s time to buckle down on something new. But how to pick that new something? I’ve got a bit of a system that works really well for me, let me know what you think!
I started by writing a short “pitch” ish paragraph about each of the ideas that were floating around in my head, on post-its, or scribbled in the back of notebooks meant for other things. I had three note card paragraphs. All NA. One is a heavy retelling. One is a fluffy romance. One is a companion to the ms I just finished.
I read each of my paragraphs a few times while thinking “If I was picking up a book at the library today which of these would it be?” If you’re like me that might not have been an easy question but you regularly leave the library with three or more books so why choose? But I forced myself to think about it. When I had decided I put a check mark on the corner of that note card.
Next, I read my paragraphs again thinking “If I saw these books on the shelf which would I be most sorry I hadn’t written myself?” Also a hard question. Again, when I decided I put a check mark on that card.
This time I read my paragraphs thinking “Which of these has a message I strongly want to convey?” Kind of pompous, yes, but still a valid thing to consider. I put another check mark on a card.
Finally, I read my paragraphs again with the question “Which of these do I want to write THIS MINUTE?” This was oddly enough the easiest of my questions. I made my final check mark.
Out of four questions, one card had three check marks. It was the clear winner. So that is the project I’m diving into! (It’s the companion, in case you were wondering.)
That’s how I decided on my next project, how do you pick your next endeavor?
