I have a super-hard time working in silence. I think it’s a byproduct of growing up in a house full of kids (my three siblings plus whatever neighborhood friends happened to be over at any given time). If it’s too quiet, I feel like there’s something wrong. Since my house is now the opposite of chaotic most days, I often blast music while I write. Sometimes I’ll just play the same song on loop for hours at a time while I draft a scene–to me, music helps me capture the mood of what I’m trying to write. So for Media Monday, I thought I’d share my playlists for my most recent books!
I’ll start with A Magic Dark and Bright, since it will be out in the world so, so soon! AMD&B is YA gothic set in a weird little Pennsylvanian town. There’s a ghost, a curse, and plenty of kissing:
Next is the book of my heart, the book I’m slowly, slowly chipping away at: Dead Man’s Hand! DMH is a historical fantasy set in the circus of 1918, featuring star-crossed lovers, fortune telling, and fate.
Last but not least is my 2014 NaNo novel–a NA mystery/romance titled Like Drops of Moonlight. The book has been put aside for the moment while I start the sequel to AMD&B, but I listen to the soundtrack constantly and scribble down notes.
Do you make playlists as you write? Do certain songs capture the mood of your projects? I’d love to listen–share your playlists in the comments!
