As you might imagine, this week has not been the most productive in terms of noveling. It’s been lovely, spent at my future in-laws and with Neil’s extended family, but it’s also been hectic, and Neil and I have also both been quite sick.
That said, I have done a great deal of brainstorming, and am feeling a lot better about longterm prospects for the novel that’s currently titled ‘Magpie Mind’. I’ve figured out some background information that will be relevant in the future (as I’m expecting the overall story to be spread over multiple books) that was important to have considered prior to ‘finishing’ the first one. I’ve also gone over what I’ve already got in the first draft and found the major problems with the story line, so I know what I’ve got to fix when I rewrite it.
Obviously I’ve gotten no where with the attempt to finish this thing in 2012, but that’s alright… it was unrealistic in the first place, and I knew that. I’m feeling a lot better now about how the second draft will go and about my characters and setting, all of which were things I really should have thought more about before beginning the first draft. I’m actually looking forward to starting the writing again, which is excellent, as it was the main goal of scrapping the first draft and replotting. I’m not dreading sitting in front of Scrivener any more.
The next week is looking to be quite busy still- we’ve got bits and pieces to do all weekend, and then we’re headed up to Neil’s sister’s near Aberdeen for New Year’s, so I won’t have an enormous amount of time in front of a computer. Should have loads of time to think, though, and sometimes that’s just as important as the writing.
And since I won’t write again before 2013… Happy New Year!! Hope you’ve all had (and continue to have) wonderful holidays!
